What is a Birth Doula?
A doula provides physical and emotional support to a mother and her family before, during, and after the birth of her baby. During the birth process, especially in a hospital, medical staff are not able to stay by the birthing mother’s side to offer support and answer questions the whole time. A doula stays by the laboring mother’s side from the moment she receives “the call” until after the baby is born with only a few short breaks. Though she is very familiar with the birth process, she cannot provide medical advice or perform medical procedures.
Should I hire a doula?
Absolutely! Even if you would like to have your partner or another family member as your primary support person, a doula can offer various positions for laboring, run errands to the car for forgotten items, step in if your support person needs a break, or even sit quietly in a corner in case you may need her. Sometimes the support person needs support!
Do doulas only attend “natural” births?
Not at all! They can provide support for both medicated and intervention-free births at hospitals, birth centers, at home, and even Caesarean births! Some doulas specialize in providing support for certain types of births and others enjoy the uniqueness of every birth.
What is a Postpartum Doula?
A postpartum doula helps ease the transition of having a new baby in the family. They do anything from grocery shopping, light housekeeping and simple cooking to holding baby while mom takes a nap or a nice long shower. They can even help overnight by changing baby’s diaper and bringing him/her to mom for feeding.
